Russell's parents inspired and nurtured his art making. His mother Jean Crotty Guthrie was a talented art jeweler and his father, Harry Crotty was an accomplished mid-century sculptor. Jean and Harry were involved in the creation of the Mendocino Arts Center in Mendocino, CA in the 1960's.
